  3. Some Armstrong fans and Jazz purists may have trouble warming up to this recording, but if you keep it in the context that he tried something different, it can grow on you. As a Louis Armstrong fan, maybe this cd has special meaning because it was his last, but it was his /5(12).

  4. Louis Armstrong and His Friends isn't among the trumpeter/singer's essential releases, but it is certainly interesting, enjoyable, and historically important. Recorded in May , Louis Armstrong and His Friends was his next-to-last studio session -- on July 6, , the jazz giant passed away. When this album (which Bluebird/RCA reissued on CD in ) was recorded, Armstrong was in poor 6/

Louis Armstrong And His Friends Louis "His Father Wore Long Hair", "Give Peace a Chance" and "This Black Cat", and on these tracks Louis struggles a little, either because of the quality of the song and/or because of dated arrangements (ie very ). But overall Louis does win through and there is some really lovely music on this album /5(2).

Thiele designed this album as a celebration of Armstrong's 70th birthday, throwing a large party for him in the studio at the start of three sessions which began on 26 May This explains how the album's opening track, 'We Shall Overcome', features a chorus sung by, amongst many others, Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman and Leon Thomas/5(8).
